Stopping PPSMI will be suicidal for IT and ICT development and national economy will suffer.

Media Statement by Dr Chen Man Hin, life adviser DAP, in Seremban on 11th November 2011

BANGALORE IN INDIA IS THE SILICON VALLEY OF ASIA AND OWES ITS SUCCESS TO THE USE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE FOR ITS RESEARCH INTO SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS.

IT development, research, teaching and practice are conducted in English. Its fame as a world centre for IT has attracted notable scientists. World number 1 computer genius BILL GATES made it a point to visit Bangalore, as it was noted to be Asia’s Silicon Valley.

Everybody wondered why the IT experts in Bangalore chose English to be the language for teaching and research, when India had so many languages to choose from.

INDIA HAS AT LEAST 800 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES AND AROUND 2000 DIALECTS. NATIONAL OFFICIAL LANGUAGES ARE HINDI AND ENGLISH, AND TWENTY STATE LANGUAGES.

With this plethora of languages, why did the scientists and researchers and managers choose ENGLISH to be the language to study, learn, analyse and teach in the universities and colleges?

Because the people in charge were practical and sensible people and they recognised the importance and usefulness of ENGLISH. As a world language of communication, science, IT, computer engineering and research. Common sense and a love for their country cause them to agree to the important objective of making Bangalore to be a world centre of Information Technology

Can we here in Malaysia be as sensible and practical as the Bangalore scientists, and devote ourselves to be single minded and work together to use English as the language for teaching of science and mathematics in schools and universities, and to unite to work for a Silicon Valley in Malaysia?

We urge DPM Muhiyydin to rise above parochial politics and do let PPSMI continue indefinitely so that our students can study maths and science in English, and become the future scientists and teachers of IT, and make Malaysia to be a world Silicon Valley.

Dr Chen Man Hin, dap life advisor
