NAJIB MISSES OPPORTUNITY IN PENANG  TO ANNOUNCE THAT VERNACULAR SCHOOLS WHETHER PRIMARY OR SECONDARY ARE ABSORBED INTO THE NATIONALEDUCATION SYSTEM

PM Najib plays cool with a visit to Penang to announce that he endorses the
continued existence of chinese vernacular schools by handing out a million
ringgit to each school. it is a clever move, as Penang is the home of many
chinese voters and houses the famous chung ling secondary college.

By this move he hoped to win back the Chinese vote which have swung towards
the Opposition throughout the country and even to Sarawak, where the chinese
majority city of Sibu overwhelmingly voted for the DAP at the recent State
elections.

The Razak name is associated strongly with the education of mother tongue
schools. In 1950 his father Tun Razak as the then Prime Minister launched
off the Razak Report on education. the report while allowing the existence
of vernacular schools, had the ultimate objective of eradicating all mother
tongue  vernacular schools. this evoke intense opposition from chinese
parents and educationists.

When DAP was founded in 1965, it led the fight for vernacular mother tongue
schools to be a perennial part of the national education policy.

Najib’s announcement that he guarantees and welcomes the continuation
of chinese schools however is a half hearted concession.  even the donation
of RM 1 million to each chinese school does not convince the people that
chinese vernacular schools are fully accepted into the national education
system. for one thing the pitiful amount of donations and grants to chinese
schools pale in comparison to the generous allocations to malay national
schools

If Najib is sincere about promoting chinese schools, he should have
announced in Penang that vernacular chinese and tamil schools hold the same
rank and status as malay national schools. this simple act would have
erased the mistake made by  his father and restored the political status of
the  Razak name in perpetuity.

The service and sacrifice of Chinese educationists like Dong Jiao Jong to
preserve chinese schools has done a great service to the country. today
these schools continue to produce students who are educated in chinese, and
they have command of the Chinese language, which have equipped them to be
able to deal with China. as everybody knows, China is now the second largest
economy in the world and presents tremendous Indian or kadazan are ready to
do business with China economists predict that China and India will be the
locomotives  to lead the world out of the recession which is looming over us.

Najib  should be thankful to the Chinese educationists who demand not money
but that PM Najib be wise enough to embrace chines schools whether primary
or secondary  schools into the education system on an equal basis with
national schools
